Instructions for a baby sweater

Instructions for one baby sweater:

Need about 80 grams of yarn, the needles size 3,5 or 4.

Cast on 70 stitches and  knit 2 two purl and 2 knit stitches  for 22 cm. Then knit 4 cm so that the 22 stitches in the middle continue as before (2/2) but 24 stitches on both sides are knitted only knit stitches ( no purl). Then make the square hole in the middle by terminating the 22 stitches in the centre and continuing both sides separately for 6 cm. Then re-cast on the centre and continue again 4 cm by 2/2 with 22 in the centre and 24 on both sides as knit only. Then make all 2/2 and knit 22 cm more before terminating. It is in the end one long piece (about 58 cm) with the square hole in the centre. Fold it and stitch the sides and leave the openings for the sleeves. 

Strickanleitung für Babypullover

Material: ca. 2 Strangen Wolle (100g) , Nadeln 3 ½ oder 4

70 Maschen anschlagen, 2 re 2 li bis 22 cm  Länge stricken. Danach beginnt das Oberteil: Die ersten 24 M  re , die mittleren 22 M 2 re 2 li und die restlichen 24 M re, 4 cm lang.

Halsausschnitt: Die mittleren 22 M abketten und beide Schulterteile mit je 24 M rechts (kraus) weiterstricken, insgesamt 6 cm lang.

Danach die mittleren 22 M wieder aufnehmen 2 re 2 li, 4 cm lang.

Fortfahren mit allen Maschen 2 re 2 li, 22 cm lang.

Abketten. Gesamtlänge der Strickarbeit ist nun ca. 58 cm mit einer viereckigen Oeffnung in der Mitte. In die Hälfte gefaltet nun die Seitennähte bis zum Armausschnitt zusammennähen.

Instructions pour une tunique: 2 pelotes de laine à 50g, aiguilles 3,5 ou 4. Montez 70 mailles et tricotez 2m envers, 2m endroit pendant 22 cm, Après, tricotez 24 mailles point mousse. Les 22 mailles au milieu, 2 m endroit, 2 m envers, les dernières 24 mailles de nouveau point mousse.

A hauteur de 4 cm, arrêtez les 22 mailles du milieu et continuez chaque coté séparément pendant 6 cm.  Remontez les 22 mailles du milieu de sorte qu'on obtienne un carré. Continuez pendant 4 cm les 24 mailles point mousse, 22 mailles de 2 m envers et 2 m endroit et les 24 m restantes en point mousse. Après les 4 cm, continuez le tout en 2 mailles envers, 2 m endroit pendant 22 cm. Arrêtez les mailles. Hauteur totale environ 58 cm avec l'ouverture carré au milieu. Pliez en deux et fermez les coutures jusqu'aux manches (jusqu'au point mousse).

Lankaa yhteen nuttuun menee noin 100 g.

• Luodaan 70 silmukkaa.
• Kudotaan kaksi oikein kaksi nurin yhteensä 22 cm.
• Sen jälkeen kudotaan aina oikein neulosta 24 silmukalla, kaksi oikein kaksi nurin 22 silmukalla ja aina oikein 24 silmukalla yht. 3 cm
• Kolmen sentin jälkeen päätetään keskimmäiset 22 silmukkaa ja kudotaan kumpikin olka erikseen aina oikein neuletta, noin kolme senttiä etukappaletta + kolme senttiä takakappaletta.
• Seuraavalla kerroksella 24 s oikein ja sen jälkeen luodaan 22 uutta silmukkaa keskelle ja taas kudotaan 24 s oikein.
• Seuraavilla kerroksilla 24 silmukkaa aina oikein, 22 silmukkaa kaksi oikein kaksi nurin ja 24 silmukkaa aina oikein, yhteensä 3 cm.
• Sitten siirrytään kokonaan takaisin kaksi oikein kaksi nurin neuleeseen, jota tehdään taas 22 cm.
• Tuloksena on siis pitkä pätkä, jossa nelikulmainen pääaukko keskellä.
• Viimeksi ommellaan sivusaumat yhteen. Käsille jätetään aukot.

Ohjeet "toukkapussi-villakapaloon"

Testaamme tätä uutuutta nyt Afganistanissa ja Suomessa. Alkuperäinen vinkki ja ohje tuli tästä blogista http://pienilankarulla.blogspot.fi/2013/11/toukkapussi-villakapalo.html.

Mutta Tuuli  Rovaniemellä teki meille uuden ohjeen kahdella puikolla sillä Afganistanissa on vaikea löytää pyöröpuikkoja.

Ohje Suomeksi:

Ohje “Toukkapussi - villakapalo” neuleeseen (Hope for the Babies International, HOBI projektia varten)

Lanka: 7 veljestä, (150 g= 300 m, 18 silmukkaa ja 26 kerrosta on 10 cm x 10 cm)

Puikot: 3,5 mm (2 kpl, alkuperäisohjeessa oli 4,0 mm pyöröpuikot)

1. Luo 100 silmukkaa kahdella puikolla; näin saat joustavamman aloituksen. Jatka koko ajan *2 oikein, 2 nurin* -joustinneuletta. 

2. Ensimmäinen lisäys: Kun työn pituus on 7 cm, tee ensimmäiset lisäykset: Kudo normaalisti *2o, 2n* 24 silmukkaa. Lisää juuri kutomiesi nurjien silmukoiden ja tulevien oikeiden silmukoiden väliin 4 silmukkaa käyttäen hyödyksi silmukoiden väliin jääviä lenkkejä. Kudo silmukat kiertäen 2 o, 2n.  Tee vastaavat lisäykset (4 silmukkaa) siten, että puikolla on vielä 24 silmukkaa kudottavana. Kaiken kaikkiaan tällä kerroksella tulee yhteensä 8 uutta silmukkaa. Jatka mallineuletta, kunnes kappaleen pituus on 14 cm. 

3. Toinen lisäys: Kun kappaleen pituus on 14 cm, tee lisäykset kuten edellä (2x4 silmukkaa lisää). Jatka mallineuletta *2o, 2n*, kunnes kappaleen pituus on 21 cm. 

4. Kolmas lisäys: Kun kappaleen pituus on 21 cm, tee lisäykset kuten edellä (2x4 silmukkaa lisää). Jatka mallineuletta *2o, 2n*, kunnes kappaleen pituus on 28 cm. 

5. Neljäs lisäys: Kun kappaleen pituus on 21 cm, tee lisäykset kuten edellä (2x4 silmukkaa lisää). Jatka mallineuletta *2o, 2n* siihen asti, kunnes kappaleen korkeus on 45 cm. 

6. Päättele 20 silmukkaa (kaula-aukko).  Jatka lopuilla silmukoilla (100 + 2x4+ 2x4+ 2x4+ 2x4-20 = 112) *2o, 2n* - joustinneuletta kerroksen loppuun. Käännä työ. 

7. Päättele seuraavan rivin alussa 8 silmukkaa. Jatka *2o, 2n* kerroksen loppuun. Käännä työ. 

8. Päättele seuraavan rivin alussa 8 silmukkaa. Jatka *2o, 2n* kerroksen loppuun. Käännä työ. 

9. Päättele seuraavan rivin alussa 4 silmukkaa. Jatka *2o, 2n* kerroksen loppuun. Käännä työ. 

10. Päättele seuraavan rivin alussa 4 silmukkaa. Jatka *2o, 2n* kerroksen loppuun. Käännä työ. 

11. Jatka kutomista *2o, 2n* siihen asti, kunnes huppukappale on 7 cm pitkä. 

12. Kun huppukappale on 7 cm pitkä, ala tehdä lisäyksiä joka kerroksella: nosta reunasilmukka puikolle, lisää 1 silmukka, kudo kerros normaalisti loppuun. Käännä työ. Kun reunassa on useampia lisättyjä silmukoita, käytin itse *1o, 1n* joustinneuletta. Keskiosan tein normaalisti *2o, 2n*-joustinneuleena. 

13. Kun lisäysosa on 12 cm pitkä (huppu kokonaisuudessaan 7+12=19 cm), päättele kaikki silmukat. 

14. Ompele hupun yläreuna yhteen (käytä neulaa). 

15. Ompele makuupussin pitkät sivut yhteen. Nyt kappale on putkilon muotoinen. Huom. Pitkä sauma ei tule putkilon keskelle. Ompele jalkopää yhteen. Päättele langat. 

Onneksi olkoon, toukkapussi on valmis käyttöön. 

Instructions for a knitted baby "cocoon"

This is a new model from Finland that we are now testing for Afghanistan.
The idea came from a Finnish blog http://pienilankarulla.blogspot.fi/2013/11/toukkapussi-villakapalo.html but as in that instruction the knitting has been made with a circular knitting needle that is not available in Afghanistan, Tuuli in Rovaniemi has developed a slightly revised model using two knitting needles.

Instructions in English:

Instructions for A knitted “baby cocoon” for Hope for the Babies International (HOBI)

Yarn: 7 veljestä  (or similar: 150 g = 300 m;  Gauge: 18 stitches x 26 rows = 10cm x 10cm)  - need about 150 grams

Needles: 3,5 mm (2 pcs)

Cast on 100 stitches with 2 needles hold together (in this way the 1st row is more stretchy). 

Row 1: *Knit 2 stitches, purl 2 stitches*. Repeat the pattern to the end of the row.  Turn the item.

Row 2:  *Knit 2, purl 2* to the end of the row. 

Use all the time this pattern (rib).  

1st increase: When the project is 7 cm long, add 4 stitches after 24 stitches. Continue *knit 2, purl 2*. Add 4 stitches when there are 24 stitches left on this row. Altogether you have added 8 new stitches on this row.  Do the increase as follows: after the last two purl stitches (the 23rd and 24th stitch on the needle), use the yarn between these and the following stitches to add those 4 new stitches. “Twist” the stitch before knitting/purling it, thus you will avoid a little hole in the pattern. You will knit the 1st and 2nd new stitches and purl the 3rd and 4th stitches. Continue normally *knit 2, purl 2* until the next increase. The total length here is 14 cm. 

2nd increase: Add 2x 4 stitches = 8 stitches as described above. Continue with *knit 2, purl 2*, until the next increase. The total length here is 21 cm. 

3rd increase: Add 2x 4 stitches = 8 stitches as described above. Continue with *knit 2, purl 2*, until the next increase. The total length here is 28 cm. 

4th increase: Add 2x 4 stitches = 8 stitches as described above. Continue with *knit 2, purl 2*, until the end. When the item is about 45 cm long, cast off 20 stitches. 

Continue with the rest of the stitches (100 + 2x 4+ 2x4+ 2x4+ 2x4-20 = 112) *knit 2, purl 2* to the end of the row. Turn the item. 

Cast off 8 stitches. Continue *knit 2, purl 2* to the end of the row. Turn the item. 

Cast off 8 stitches. Continue *knit 2, purl 2* to the end of the row. Turn the item.

Cast off 4 stitches. Continue *knit 2, purl 2* to the end of the row. Turn the item. 

Cast off 4 stitches. Continue *knit 2, purl 2* to the end of the row. Turn the item.

Continue *knit 2, purl 2*. 

When the hood is 7 cm long, start increasing on each row one stitch: Knit the 1st stitch on the row, add a stitch, continue with the *knit 2, purl 2* pattern. Turn the item and add one stitch etc. 

When you have more increases, I used *knit 1, purl 1* ribbing for the part with the increases. The middle section was still made with the normal *knit 2, purl 2* pattern. When this part is 12 cm long (altogether 7+12 =19 cm), cast off.

Sew the long sides together (use a needle here).   Now you have a tube. NB The seam is not in the middle of the tube. Sew the short side together (for the feet). Sew the top together (hood). Weave in ends. 

Congratulations! The baby cocoon is ready for use.

More happy babies in Khairkhana hospital, Kabul

Some babies were in such a deep sleep that we did not want to wake them up and dress the outfit on them but just gave to the mother and placed the sweater and the hat on the top of the baby.

34 babies had been born in the 24 hours before we distributed sweaters, hats, sock and blankets. This baby boy is a lucky one to receive HOBI outfit.

Newborn baby girl receiving today a HOBI outfit in Dashte Barchi clinic in western part of Kabul! There had been 11 babies born during the night but most of them had been already sent home with their mothers because of the patient rooms not having heating in the clinic. Therefore the sweaters, hats, socks and blankets provided by HOBI are highly appreciated! Thank you!

Happy New Year 2014!

Thank you for all the wonderful work and collaboration we have had with people around the world. The original name of this knitting project was "Omeed-e-kodak" which means "hope of the babies" in dari language, which is one of the official languages of Afghanistan. That is the reason for the name of this blog. But we have now changed to "Hope for the Babies International, HOBI" because the activities have expanded. We have not been updating this blog recently because we have much more followers on Facebook and we get quick feedback from there. And we are also working on a proper website which will hopefully open in this month of January 2014.
